A handful of core plugins can transform your RPG note-taking.

Obsidian is awesome for organizing and running tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. Plugins extend the native functionality to give game masters even more options and tools to consider carefully. Here are a handful of plugins worth checking out.

Core Plugins

Core plugins can be found in your vault’s Settings under Core plugins. Most of these are great (though my spicy take is that Graph view is highly overrated). Plugins like Files, Quick switcher, and Search are so critical that I’d consider them default features. Here are some other core plugins worth looking at:

  • Backlinks
  • Outgoing links
  • Outline
  • Page preview
  • Workspaces

Backlinks shows you linked and unlinked mentions of your current note from all other notes in your vault. It’s a great way to know where your current note is mentioned and in what context. You can immediately go to those notes with a single click or create links for any unlinked mentions.

Outgoing links show you both linked and unlinked mentions of other notes in your vault from your current note. It’s a great way to know which notes in your vault you are mentioning the current note. Like backlinks, you can immediately go to those notes or create links with a single click.

Outline

Outline simply finds any headings and creates an interactive outline for your current note. You can click headings to jump to that section of the note and even drag and drop headings within the outline to rearrange entire sections of the note. This is particularly useful for large notes.

Page Preview

Page preview allows you to preview a note by hovering your mouse pointer over a link. This is really useful to get a quick look or reference at something without needing to open the note. Pro tip: put flavor text or important bits at the top of every note to ensure that previews are showing you the most important references first.

Workspaces

Workspaces let you save and load workspace layouts. Opening the same sidebars and notes every time you play? Save it as a workspace to load your preferences with a single action. Want to collapse all sidebars every time you look at your world map? Save that view as a workspace.

Equipped with these Core plugins, we can confidently organize and manage our RPG notes. In the next article, I’ll cover Community plugins worth looking at.

Game on.
